IBM — Centrify Partnership Brings Identity Security to IBM Big Insights

Centrify and IBM

IBM is truly the original Big Data company. Going back to 1911 when IBM (then called Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, or C-T-R) acquired Herman Hollerith’s Tabulating Machine Co., IBM has continuously brought innovation and insight to data recorded with computing machines.  The Tabulating machine was invented by Mr. Hollerith to count the 1890 US Census. It sorted and counted information recorded by punching holes in cards, and Hollerith had begun selling the machines to governments, railroad companies and retailers. Thus began the Big Data era.  The idea that businesses could gather data and analyze it to obtain competitive advantage/improve efficiency became the driving theme behind IBM and its many computing platforms.  Fast forward 100 years and IBM is still innovating around data aggregation and analysis while leading the charge behind Apache Hadoop and its own Big Data platform — Big Insights.

partnershipCentrify and IBM have partnered to provide IBM Big Insights customers with the capability to secure even the most complex Big Insights environments in a simple and straightforward way by “Centrifying” a Big Insights cluster.(Centrifying: v. meaning to secure a unix or linux system using the Centrify Server Suite).  In this case, Centrifying a Big Insights Hadoop cluster will allow it to be easily connected to a company’s existing Active Directory infrastructure. The result is enterprise-wide authentication, access control, privilege management, auditing and secure machine-to-machine communications which includes your BigInsights clusters, nodes and services.

IBM® BigInsights™ for Apache™ Hadoop is an industry standard Hadoop offering that combines the best of open source software with enterprise-grade capabilities. It helps organizations to cost effectively manage and analyze big data — the volume and variety of data that customers and businesses create and collect every day. IBM has worked with partners like Centrify to make sure BigInsights integrates easily with enterprise infrastructure securely.

The Centrify Server Suite solution for BigInsights is an enterprise-grade offering that provides the following Key Benefits:

  • Secure and simplify BigInsights environments without the hassle of deploying and managing new identity infrastructure. Centrify makes it simple to run Hadoop in secure mode by leveraging your existing identity management infrastructure — Active Directory. Minimize costs by eliminating the need for parallel solutions — that may not be enterprise ready — and leveraging existing skill sets.
  • Increase productivity and security via single sign-on for IT admins and BigInsights users. By extending the power of Active Directory’s Kerberos and LDAP capabilities to your Big Insights clusters, Centrify delivers authentication for BigInsights administrators and end users.
  • Secure machine-to-machine communication across the nodes in your cluster. Centrify automates Big Insights service account management. Centrify not only secures user identity but also system and service account identity.
  • Mitigate threats resulting from identity-related risks and address compliance and audit requirements. Big Insights environments store your organization’s most important data. Centrify controls access, manages privileges, audits activity and associates everything back to an individual, thereby making your data more secure. Centrify delivers cost-effective compliance with reporting on who has access and who did what across Big Insights clusters, nodes and services.
