An intern by definition is a student or trainee who works at a trade or occupation in order to gain work experience. But I’ve learned that an intern means so much more. They’re a glimpse of the future, a peak into the young, innovative and brilliant minds that will one day make a difference, run our companies, and change the world.
What Did You Learn while Interning at Centrify?
Colin Parsons: I learned how the workplace functions with a larger company, how to build neural networks for computer vision, how to use AWS, and how to communicate my work and goals more effectively with my manager.
Amrith Mylvara: I learned how to redesign webpages so that users can better accomplish what they want to do and how to write scripts to track metrics. I also learned how to facilitate and run meetings and general discussions and presentations with/to people that are older and more experienced than you.
What Advice Can You Share from Your Experience?
Alex Huynh learned that networking is huge for internships, whether it is to land your next internship or when you’re currently interning at a company. It is so important to network and learn from the executives/c-suite/directors because if that’s where you want to be in the future, then you should learn from them. They have so much experience and knowledge to pass onto interns, especially if you are from an underrepresented group. It is equally important to build relationships with your fellow interns! You never know who is going to run his or her own company next.
He also noted that Excel has a lot of cool features. Alex advises that everyone should learn excel because it is useful for organizing your work and anything else you could think of. Lastly, Alex wants people to remember that every person was hired on for a purpose. These positions were created because the company needed someone with your skillsets. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise or make you feel like you don’t belong.
I didn’t know what I expected when I joined Centrify, but it definitely wasn’t to find multiple mentors, friends and my corporate family. I have not only had the pleasure of learning the ins and outs of business development and marketing, but I was able to find a place that I was excited to go to in the morning. Everyone there just wants you to succeed and be happy! I never felt confined to my “intern roles” either. I was always encouraged by my superiors to think outside of the box and was able to take on multiple projects by many different teams and disciplines. I want to stress that your internship/job is what you make of it. If you show up and do the minimal effort then you will feel minimal pride in your work and minimal drive to be there at all. We need to get rid of the stigma that work is not fun and that we’re always tired and bored. Take on extra projects, branch out, help others with their work, and do more than just physically show up. When you bring yourself mentally strong to work, you’ll be amazed at the outcome and how much room you have to grow personally and professionally.
All Work and No Play?
Our interns didn’t just stick to their projects and collect their paychecks.
Two of our interns, Anthony and Nathaniel, play ping pong professionally and thrived at our table in the break room. Everyone loved challenging them, but no one could survive their wicked serves. Four of our interns also joined our company’s pick-up basketball group that plays every Tuesday and Thursday. I was the first girl in the league! I also restarted the marketing organization’s Breakfast Club where everyone takes a break from their busy morning to eat a delicious breakfast and decompress every Tuesday.
Every time it was one of our end dates, we would throw mixers and ice cream socials for the last few hours of the day to say a proper goodbye.
It’s been a privilege to work with the interns this summer and watch all of us grow. We will always be a part of the Centrify family.
